Favorite Reads in 2015

So, this year I read some great books.  Some were not so great, but overall I enjoyed most of them. In honour of it beings he end of 2015, I am going  to name my favourite reads of 2015.

The name of the wind (Patrick Rothfuss)-5/5
Kvothe was a magician, musician and much more. There was a lot of rumours of what happened to him. When Kvothe helps a travelling scribe Chronicler, he agrees to tell his story. Kvothe informs the Chronicler that the story will take three days to tell.  One day for each book in the trilogy.  The story begins with Kvothe during his childhood, from his time among a group of travelling performers to his years as a beggar in the city of Tarbean and then as he enters university. This is a fantastic epic fantasy book and I cannot wait to finish the rest of the series.

Heir of fire (Sarah J. Mass)- 5/5
Heir of fire is the third book in the throne of glass series.  I won't get into what happens in this book, but in the throne of glass we meet Celaena Sardothien, who is the Assassin of Adarlan   A year after being sentenced to the salt mines of EndovierCelaena is given the option by Prince Dorian to compete in a tournament to see who will become the Kings champion.  If Celaena wins she will serve the king for four years then will be granted her freedom. I definitely recommend this series. Review

the Martian (Andy Weir)- 4.5/5
The Martian is about Mark Watney, who is stranded on Mars.  After a dust storm, which forces his crew to leave while thinking Mark is dead.  With no way to contact Earth or the rest of his crew.  He must find a way to survive with his damaged equipment and supplies slowly running out.  I found this an exciting and thrilling read. Review

Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell)- 5/5
Cath and Wren are twins about to start college.  They do everything together.  When Wren decides she  no longer wants to be part of a pair.  Wren gets a new roommate and is very excited to start.  It is not so easy for Cath.  Fangirl follows Cath through her first year of college I found fangirl very relatable and funny.  While I do not read a lot of contemporary, I really enjoyed this book.

Poison study (Maria V. Snyder)- 4.5/5
Yelena Zaltana is about to be executed, but when given the chance to become food help protect JIlltaster to the military leader of Ixia Commander Ambros, Yelena takes it.  While General Brazell has vowed revenge against her for killing his son.  Yelena needs to control her magical growing inside her.

The ruby circle (Richelle Mead)- 4.5/5
The Ruby Circle is the final book in the Bloodlines Series which is a spin-off from the Vampire Academy.  Bloodlines centres an alchemist Sydney Sage as she is sent to Palm Springs to help protect a Moroi, Jill.  The Moroi and Alchemist beleive they will be safe in an Human Boarding School, Amberwood Prep.  They soon discover there are dangers both in the school and in Palm Springs

Clockwork princess (Cassandra Clare)- 5/5
Is the final to infernal devices trilogy which is the prequel to the mortal instruments.  I won't get into this book, but this trilogy Tessa Gray as she allies herself with the mysterious shadowhunters as she searches for her missing brother.  Which include Will and Jem,  who Tessa finds herself attracted to.  They must work together to stop a secret organisation of vampires, demons, warlocks and humans.  I thought this was a fantastic ending to an excellent trilogy.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone (Illustrated Edition) (J.K Rowling)-5/5
Harry Potter discovers he is a wizard on his eleventh birthday. Harry has been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  The Philosopher's Stone follow Harry's first year along with his new friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. I read the new illustrated edition, which is filled with beautiful illustrations. If you have not read Harry Potter yet you should definitely pick this series up.

Heir of fire - Sarah j maas (spoilers)

Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas
Released: September 2, 2014
Pages: 576
Heir of fire.  Wow I can not believe everything that happened in this book.  I really loved this book.  I can not believe what I just read.  So much happened.  It is one of my favourite books I read this year. Now I think that it is best to spilt this review into three parts first I will talk about Celaena and Rowan, then Manon and the other Ironteeth Witches and then finally what happened with Chaol and Dorian. Now some of these characters are new but I will le you guys know about them when I reach their parts.

When we saw Celaena she was sent to Wendlyn to assassinate the royal family.  We come to heir of fire, she has arrived and drunk.  She eventually meets fae warrior Rowan Whitethorn. Rowan end up taking Celaena to her aunt Maeve who Rowan is sworn to. Celaena is trying to find the answers about the mysterious Wrydkeys.   Celaena must travel to Doranelle, before she can receive the information.  This is a more difficult than she first believed.  Before Celaena can Doranelle she must prove that she is worthy by Rowan.

Now Rowan, he started out as a jerk.  He seemed scary and angry. He definitely was not impressed about having to train Celaena.  At first Rowan thinks she is just spoiled  and rich, while Celaena finds him rude and  judgmental.   Slowly they soon discover that us not the case and eventually became friends or at least allies.

While I was aware many people really loved Rowan I did not see it at first.  About halfway through I started to see something in Rowan.  At the end I loved their friendship.  I was so glad that Celaena saved Rowan and they each helped the other.

Another new character we met is Manon Blackbeak.  Manon is heir to the Blackbeak witch-clan.  She is ruthless and very determined.  Witches become part of the kings newest plan as the riders of wyverns.  Manon spends a majority of her story trying to prove she has what to takes to become wing  leader.  I ended up really loving her character, especially her interactions with her wyvern Abraxos.   I can not wait till she meets Celaena I feel like those scenes will be priceless.

Coming to Chaol, he spent a majority of the start of the book trying to come to terms with Celaena secret we discovered in Crown of midnight.   She is Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, heir to the Terrasen throne.  Now Chaol must choose whether he will continue to serve a corrupt King or help Celaena.  He just could not make up his mind.   It was fantastic when he finally did.

While, Dorian was dealing with his magic.   I liked his relationship with Sorcha.   I really enjoyed how she accepted his magic and was there helping him through it.  Once he no longer trusted Chaol.  This was so upsetting.  They were such good friends in the past two books, it was a shame to see them not really talking anymore. Especially since they both wanted to share something with the other.  Dorian discovered the truth about Celaena,  which caused the feud between the friends.  It was hard to continue.  I was really glad he had Sorcha to help him.  I was devastated when the King killed her after everything she had done in this book, then seeing Dorian's reaction was heart breaking.

We also meet Aedion a cousin of Aelin and they were also childhood friends.  When we first meet Aedion, I was worrying that he was going to cause a lot to of trouble.  it finally turn out he is still loyal to Aelin.  It was sweet to see Aedion do everything he can think of to help Aelin.  I just can not wait until they are reunited.

It was great to see Aedion and Chaol teamed up.  I feel that this is exactly what Chaol need in helping he make his decision. Dorian needed a person to help control his magic.  Sorcha was a great no judgement help.

So, heir of fire is my favourite in the series, probably one of my favourite reads this year.  I can not wait till I get to the rest of the series.

I would give this book 5/5.

Have you read heir of fire. What did you think of it? Let us know in the comments below.

The Martian- Andy Weir

The Martian by Andy Weir
Released: August 27, 2015
Pages: 369
Buy it: Amazon | Book Despository
I thought this book was fantastic.  It was an exciting, fast paced and surprisingly a bunch of humour.  It was incredibly well researched but found the science a little hard to follow at times.

Mark Watney was sarcastic and I thought it was great being able to follow his story.  When I was not worried about what Watney was going to do next, I was laughing about comments he made.

Once I started I could not put it down.  I needed to know what would happen next.   I am really glad I picked it up.

In the end I gave the Martian 4.5/5.

I haven't seen the movie but am really looking forward to see it.  What did you think of the Martian? Did you enjoy the movie let us know in the comments below.

Evernight (spoiler)

Evernight by Claudia Grey
Released: February 10, 2009
Pages: 327
Buy it: Amazon | Book Despository
Evernight, Bianca has just moved from her small hometown and is enrolled to Evernight Academy where her parents are new teachers.  Evernight is full of students who are too perfect and Bianca knows she does not fit in.

Bianca meets Lucas, an mysterious outsider.  Who she shares a connection with, but there are dark secrets tearing them apart.

Starting out, Buanca does not seem aware what was happening at the Evernight.  Which is why I was very surprised to find the twist, not only was Bianca fully aware of vampires.  Bianca is a vampire.   Well she is a half vampire.

It took a while for me to adjust to Lucas.  He seems very  protective, at times sweet but defensive.  When it is revealed that Lucas also has a secret.  He comes from a family of vampire hunters, once this was disclosed  he made much more sense to me.

Now, Bianca and Lucas pairing was enjoyable.  I could see they were connected, but did not feel overly attached to them.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Thought it was a great start to the series.

I would give this book a 4/5 stars.

what was your thoughts of Evernight?  Let us know in the comments.
